President opens cultural centre for Krishna society
BY OUR CORRESPONDENT
Bangalore, May 31:

"In our efforts for modernisation and growth, we must never forget the philosophy of humanism of our civilisation. There can be no real progress and prosperity, no balanced material and spiritual development unless and until the poorest of the poor and the weakest in our country prosper and progress." Said President Shanker Dayal Sharma.

Speaking after inaugurating the centre for advancement of culture of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness, Dr Sharma said "in today's world, there appears to be a relentless and single minded pursuit for material wealth and prosperity. Material wealth has not necessarily brought happiness and peace of mind and instead it has been accompanied by considerable mental stress and tensions and has led to a spiral and insatiable greed and desire which remains unfulfilled. It is in such a context that our tradition with philosophy of love, compassion, non-violence and service has acquired new meaning, relevance and significance. The approach of Bhakti not merely to God but to all beings who belong to God and of selfless service, has been preached by our seers and saint singers from remote antiquity."

Talking about Srila Prabhupada who is one of the prominent preachers of Iskcon, Dr Sharma said Prabhupada had struck a sympathetic chord among the people which has resonated across the oceans and continents and his approach was remarkable for its simplicity. This is reflected in the singing of kirthanas and in living a good and decent life in harmony worth oneself, society and with nature.

Jayapataka Swami, the governing body commissioner and guru of Iskcon, spoke on the occasion. "Culture is the way for India to give what it needs today. Due to westernisation, the education system has degraded the students from cultural and spiritual drive. The youth should imbibe a feeling of pride, history and culture for better living."

Karnataka chief minister J.H. Patel, Governor Khurshed Alam Khan, former chief minister Ramakrishna Hegde, minister for industries R.V. Deshpande, MP Ananth Kumar were present on the occasion.

Jayapataka Swami also remembered Mr Hegde's contribution by giving seven acres land for the temple construction.

Mr Madhu Pandit Das, project director welcomed the guests and gave the introductory speech and Lokanath Swami proposed vote of thanks.
